My sister is due to have her first baby any day now, and I would love to give her something just for her. I have never had kids, so could you tell me what would make a terrific gift for a new mom?
Laurie, The MNBC Mommy's answer: How terrific you have recognized that new moms need some pampering. Caring for a newborn baby can be overwhelming in itself, but add exhaustion and crazy hormones to the mix...Trust me, she will love anything that shows you are thinking of HER and supporting her.
I polled my "mommy friends" to see what gifts they thought would really make a new mom feel special, and here are their ideas:
A pamper me basket. Some goodies to make her feel good--lotions, candles, a comfortable night gown. If you have extra money, a massage to a good massage therapist.
Cleaning service, grocery delivery, meals delivered, books on tape.
Gift certificate for a manicure/pedicure; scented candles, lotions, body sprays...
Gift certificate for a massage or Bath & Body Works... Oh! Pay for a maid service to clean her house!
My best friend said, "Do you remember what you gave me after my first baby? It meant so much to me and really lifted my spirits. It was a pretty night gown. It made me feel pretty and important for the first time in months."
I'm sure that these ideas will get you going in the right direction. Personally, I'd be thrilled to receive any of these.
