My Sick Baby

by Krissy
(Huntsville, TX, USA)

We just got his 2 month shots, and almost immediately after, he starts getting sick! I thought the shots where supposed to help him, not make him sick.

I'm scared because he's my first and the antibiotics they gave him are giving him horrible diarrhea that's also giving him a nasty diaper rash. He's also got an ear infection and is congested. They gave me a nebulizer and also steroids to help.

I guess what I'm asking is what do I give him for his diaper rash that is getting worse every day. Please help.

Hang in there!

You poor mama! I feel so badly for you getting hit with so many difficulties this early on. It just tears your heart out when they are so little and sick.

Hopefully it was just a bad coincidence that your baby became sick right after his immunizations. Reactions to vaccinations are quite common.

To learn more about the various vaccinations and their possible side effects, see my page on childhood immunizations. Then follow the links on that page under the heading "Making the decision about childhood immunizations".

Be sure to discuss with your doctor the possibility of whether or not the shots may have caused your son's illness.

As far as the diaper rash, it may be best to consult your physician. The diaper rash remedy page explains the four main types of diaper rash. The types are: Irritation, Bacterial, Yeast/Fungal, and Allergic. Your baby could fall into any of these four categories.

The diarrhea could cause either of the first two types. The rash could also be a yeast rash caused by the antibiotics, or an allergic reaction due to either the medicines or the immunizations. It is important to properly identify the type of rash because treatment is different for each.

Hang in there. I promise it won't always be this hard!
