Is this newborn baby acne?

My 4 week old baby just started having small red spots on her face. There were just 2 yesterday, and now there are several more. Is this newborn baby acne? What can I do about it?
Laurie - The MNBC Mommy's Answer: Without actually seeing, my guess is yes, this may be the beginning of newborn acne.
I understand what a bummer this can be. Just about the time you are starting to feel recovered enough to get out and show off your baby, her adorableness is obscured by bright red pimples!
YOU know how beautiful your baby is, and you are afraid no one else will see past the blotches on her face to see her beauty!
Here is a photo of my baby number six displaying all of her baby acne, right in time for our Christmas gatherings.

There is good news and bad news about baby acne. The bad news is that it may get worse before it gets better. The good news is that it doesn't ususally last very long.
Newborn baby acne is a common skin ailment that usually begins within the first 6 weeks. It is caused by Mom's hormones passed on to the baby before birth. The pimples are usually contained to the face, but may also be found on the neck and back.
Most of the time, the newborn acne will clear up on its own in a few weeks. Rarely, the infant acne is severe enough to need medical treatment.
To help speed healing, wash your newborn's face daily with water and a
mild, chemical-free baby wash, and then pat dry.
Don't be tempted to scrub or pick at the spots, as this may further irritate them. Also, do not use creams/oils (will make the problem worse), or non-prescription acne medicines (too harsh).
I have heard good things about mom's who've rubbed breastmilk on their baby's face. Breastmilk is full of anti-bacterial properties. It is certainly worth a try if you are breastfeeding.
If the baby pimples last longer than a couple of months, or if they appear scaly or infected, do consult your pediatrician.
