"A perfect example of minority rule is a baby in the house." --Milwaukee Journal
|
While it really doesn't appear that there is much going on in that tiny little head, if you could see what is truly going on, it would be astonishing! At the time of birth, a newborn baby has about 100 billion nerve cells, but relatively few synapses (or connections) between them. Hundreds of trillions of synapses will develop over the first few years of life, driven mostly by experiences through the senses.1

(No wonder babies are always tired. There is a LOT going on in there!)
While interaction with others will provide the greatest opportunity for your newborn baby's development, he will also need to learn about the world around him through experiencing it. Providing your baby with infant educational toys will help fill in the gaps.
Yes, infant toys are for fun but toys serve a greater purpose than pure entertainment. Choosing a few, select, infant educational toys will provide your newborn baby with some tools to stretch his development. (They will also entertain for all of the attention span that a newborn can muster).
My Family's Favorite Baby Infant Toys
My favorite toys to start out with are the ones that my babies can enjoy while developing multiple senses. Tops on my list are
this mobile from Fisher Price
and
Sofie the Giraffe.

This baby crib mobile is well-loved because it stimulates not only the sight, but also the hearing in unusual ways. In addition to the traditional moving animals, it also has an image projection that can be shown on the canopy of the mobile, or on the ceiling when your baby gets bigger.
The sounds it plays include sounds of the womb, classical music, or nature sounds. Best of all, it comes with a remote so that I can turn it on (again) if my baby is still awake and in need of some distraction.
Apparently, Sofie the Giraffe is not just a favorite with us. According to thousands of reviews, she has become a favorite around the world. Soft, rubbery, organic, squeaky, perfect for tiny hands to grasp, and smells good...what more can you ask for in a toy? This is not your average plastic teething toy.
This one will be the one reached for repeatedly, and will probably end up being the special comfort toy your baby can't sleep without.
Benefits of Your Creativitiy
As your baby grows and matures, give him new textures, sights, and sounds to explore. Soft toys that rattle or make music, toys that flash or have contrast in color (eyesight is the least developed sense at birth), and even everyday items around your house can be beneficial (use your imagination). As long as he cannot...
- hurt himself with it (bowling ball)
- swallow it (Mom's lipstick)
- gag on it a (3/8" wrench)
- or ruin it (Dad's new tie)
...it can be an object for your baby to explore. (He
can learn from those other things too, it just wouldn't be a positive learning experience!)
Continually expanding your baby's horizons won't necessarily result in a child genius, but it will result in a child who is well on his way to fully developing his abilities and talents.
