The Advantages of Breastfeeding
Since the advantages of breastfeeding are so well documented, why do so many new mothers choose formula? It seems like every few months, I read of some new breastfeeding benefits that science has uncovered. In what other way can a woman save money, lose weight, and promote health in themselves and their newborn baby, all by sitting around and relaxing for a while everyday. What's not to like?
As I see it, many young women never had breastfeeding positively modeled before them as they grew up. Others are vaguely aware of the benefits of breastfeeding, but don't receive the needed teaching and support to get them on their way. In many cases, it is the fear of the unknown. Some expectant moms think that there will be too many "inconveniences" if they choose to breastfeed. To those of us who have done it successfully, it's a "no-brainer" decision. For those who need a little more convincing... - Did you know that there is a lower risk of SIDS in breastfed babies?7
- Did you know that adults who were breastfed show a higher average IQ?8
- Did you know that breastfeeding lowers the incidence of breast cancer in the Mom?9
- Did you know that children who are breastfed at least three months have approximately half as many cavities as those who are formula fed?10
I could go on and on and on...and I do!
See Breast Feeding vs. Bottle Feeding to see even more advantages of breast feeding
along with an in-depth look at the pros and cons of both. It's difficult to communicate to one who has never experienced it, the profound satisfaction that comes from breastfeeding. It is an incredible feeling to watch that scrawny, little newborn baby quickly grow into one that is healthy and plump...purely from your own breast milk! In some regard, it is similar to the awe felt when gazing at your newborn baby's face for the first time, and marveling that this little person grew inside of you! An expectant mother needs to be encouraged that any perceived "sacrifice" will result in huge dividends.
